The Devils have been lucky thus far with the schedule. While the Devils won’t play their third game until Friday night, by then most teams will be on game No. 4 and some will have already played three times in five nights. That sort of spread-out schedule has allowed the Devils to use Marty Brodeur in both of their first two games and then likely again Friday night against Washington. Except Pete DeBoer knows that’s set to change soon. So how long until we see No. 2 goalie Johan Hedberg in net?
Here’s what DeBoer said Wednesday:
We’ve got a plan that obviously as the schedule picks up here there’s gonna be some opportunities to run both guys. And again, that’s gonna come at us pretty quickly in the next couple weeks.
Corey GriffinHedberg told me basically the same thing after practice, saying he knows the brain trust has a plan and he just has to wait for the call. Lucky for him, it should be pretty soon. Starting on Friday, the Devils play every other day for two and a half weeks. As much as Marty wants to play, I don’t think anyone sees him playing with that much frequency. Also, Hedberg noted that plans can change — a goalie gets hot or suddenly looks tired and you’ve got to change whatever “plans” you might have had. Expect Heddy to see the ice sometime on the Devils’ upcoming road trip to Montreal and Boston.
