After Mattias Tedenby’s demotion, the Devils’ next big roster decision will be what to do with Stefan Matteau. His five-game NHL trial ends after Tuesday’s game in Boston, at which point the Devils must decide whether to keep him for the entire season or send him back to juniors.
Tuesday night’s game could the last with the Devils this season for Matteau. Matteau, 18, has already played in four games this season. If he plays in six or more, it would count as a full year off his entry-level contract and move him a year closer to free agency.
Lamoriello said he’s “not sure yet” what the team will do with Matteau after Tuesday’s game.
Lamoriello said things remain “status quo” with left wing Mathieu Darche, who remains unsigned. Darche flew to Montreal for the weekend to visit his family, but will skate back in New Jersey this afternoon.
Expect to see a lot of roster shuffling in the next week. The Matteau decision will likely dictate how they handle Adam Henrique’s return and thus how they handle left wing on the first line. As for Darche — I have to imagine he’s getting tired of waiting around. It might be time to move or get off the pot when it comes to the veteran left wing.
