Happy Birthday: Third-line winger Stefan Matteau will be celebrating his 19th birthday. The young forward has recorded two points and will play in his 11th game this year. Matteau’s lone goal came in New Jersey’s 4-1 win over Pittsburgh on Feb. 9.

Not making a killing: New Jersey’s penalty kill was 2-for-4 in its 3-2 win Thursday and has fallen to 22nd in the NHL, killing just 79 percent of all power-play chances against. The Devils’ PK is especially cold of late, having killed just 12 of its last 20 (60 percent).

This and that: Hedberg will make his fifth road start this year. The Devils’ backup netminder has not started at Prudential Center yet in 2013… Capitals forward Troy Brouwer has recorded points in seven of Washington’s last nine games. Brouwer leads Washington with seven goals… Fresh off another two-point night, Patrik Elias now has recorded at least one point in 11 of New Jersey’s first 17 games. Six of those games have been multi-point games… Ilya Kovalchuk has recorded points in four straight games against Washington. He’s scored in three of those games… New Jersey’s earned points in six of its eight road games this year. The Devils are 4-2-2 away from Prudential Center.
