The Devils received a little more clarity on how long Dainius Zubrus will be sidelined after he underwent surgery on his left wrist Thursday.
Corey GriffinFirst of all, allow me this opportunity to rip on one of my most hated sports PR terms ever — “successful” surgery. There’s no way to know if the procedure was successful until after the recovery unless it involves a life or death situation. THEN, you can say it’s successful. When it’s surgery to repair a wrist or a knee or whatever, it’s just surgery. Are we supposed to applaud the doctors for not killing a player during a routine procedure? As Chris Rock once said — You’re supposed to do your job!
That said — this is about the best case scenario for the Devils. A two-week recovery after any sort of surgery was highly unlikely, so the Devil shave to be happy Zubrus could return by the middle of March. Realistically, we’re probably looking a week or two after that since I doubt the Devils will rush the 34-year old back with a stretch run looming. This also puts a nice little countdown clock on Stefan Matteau and Bobby Butler’s time on the Devils roster. Barring another injury, it’s likely one of them will need to be sent down once Zubrus returns, giving them at least a month to show what they’ve got. Let the showcase begin.
