When the Devils waived Cam Janssen earlier Wednesday, there was a lot of speculation the Devils were clearing a roster space for Adam Henrique. The second-year center has skated with the team off and on recently while he nears a return from hand surgery and GM Lou Lamoriello seemed to intimate the extra space could be used to finally activate Henrique.
“We had to make some roster moves,” Lamoriello said. “We might be activating Adam Henrique. We’ll see how he is. He’s very close. It’s day by day.”
Lamoriello would not say whether Henrique will play against the Islanders tomorrow night, but it is a definite possibility.
Corey GriffinI’ve been saying for a couple weeks now that Thursday’s game against the Islanders seemed like a very realistic target for Henrique. I thought that with Stefan Matteau’s NHL trial (which we’ve now seen the Devils plan to drag out) “expiring” after Tuesday’s game, Lou would be able to clear himself a roster spot by re-assigning Matteau to juniors. That’s still an option, but with Janssen off the roster as of noon tomorrow, the Devils can play themselves a nice game of roster roulette with possibly two spots open. Lou might be waiting to see if they get their hands on Zach Boychuk through waivers before using Janssen’s spot. He also could be waiting to see if Henrique shows up to tomorrow’s morning skate ready to play. The Devils also have Mathieu Darche still hanging around, although Lou said things with him are “status quo.” I’d say what I expect, but Lou is basically the Eric Cartman of NHL executives. Either way, we should finally have some clarity on how this roster will look going forward within the next 24 to 36 hours.
