Practice Report: Boulton is Back, Brodeur is Ready, Elias Scare

The practice lines were shaken up today. The lines were:
Kovalchuk-Parise-Clarkson
Sykora-Elias-Zubrus
Tedenby-Henrique-Palmieri
Boulton-Carter-Janssen
Extra: Pelley, Mills

The defensive pairings were:
Tallinder-Larsson
Greene-Fayne
Salvador-Volchenkov
Extra: Fraser
Goalies: Brodeur, Hedberg.

Eric Boulton returned to practice after hurting his hand in fight with San Jose Sharks’ defenseman Douglas Murray.

Martin Brodeur says that he is okay to play on Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. However nothing is set in stone at the moment. With two consecutive games on Wednesday and Thursday one could figure that Brodeur is going to play one of them.

Scary moment today when Patrik Elias left the ice hobbling during practice from Anton Volchenkov stepping on the outside of his left ankle. Elias said after practice, “I was just milking it.” Everyone breath a sigh of relief.

Injury Report: Jacob Josefson Out, Boulton Hurting

Eric Boulton’s hand has been hurting thanks to Douglas Murray’s face. It was a good fight to say the least. Take a peak.



In the same game against the San Jose Sharks, Jacob Josefson broke his right collarbone and is expected to be out 3-4 months. With the injury to Travis Zajac and Josefson this leaves the Devils weak down the center. It will be interesting to see what the Devils do fill the voids at center.

“I did some good things and bad things, but it was good to get the first game away and just take with me everything in this game into Monday.”

Ilya Kovalchuk Postgame:

“I didn’t think created much. The first game everybody was a little nervous and to tried to do a little too much.”

Peter DeBoer Postgame:

Devils were playing a slower speed compared to the Flyers.

“Nothing looked good tonight and we just have to learn from it. We got a good lesson tonight from a very good hockey team.”

on Adam Larsson “I thought he was good for his first night. We had a lot of young guys in the lineup with first night jitters.”

Team Notes:

First time the Devils have been shutout in a season opener.

Devils were outshot 29-20.

Devils went 0-5 on the power play.

Sellout crowd of 17,625.

Player Notes:

David Clarkson and Eric Boulton received game misconducts in the 3rd period.

Martin Brodeur made his 17th consecutive season opener.

Adam Larsson became eighth 18 year old to play for the Devils.

Ilya Kovalchuk and Nick Palmieri were both -3.

Anton Volchenkov would require six stitches by his upper lip after being hit my the puck on the bench in the 2nd period.
