Steve Bernier scored the only goal for the Devils today in a 3-1 loss to the Florida Panthers. It was his first NHL goal with the New Jersey Devils. Also it was his first NHL goal since February 10th, 2011 as a member of the Florida Panthers. Isn’t that a little ironic scoring your first NHL goal with another club against your former team almost a year to the date.
The Devils were able to score 6 goals today against the Philadelphia Flyers. It is no secret that Devils don’t score a whole lot often. The last time the Devils scored 6 goals in a game was on December 16th against the Dallas Stars on Scott Niedermayer night. Another fun fact the Devils went 3 for 7 on the power play.
The Devils have given up their first shorthanded goal in 11 games last night. That still gives them the league worst with 13 shorthanded goals against. That has got to be better addressed in the second half of the season as the schedule gets tougher as we get closer to the playoffs.
Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 20th goal of the season yesterday in the Devils’ 4-3 victory over the Rangers.
That goal marks the 10th time Kovalchuk has reached the 20 goal mark in his 10 year career.
Friday the San Jose Sharks come to town to take on the Devils. This also is the return of former Devils Goaltender Corey Schwab. If you do not remember Schwab was on the 2003 Stanley Cup roster when the Devils won the cup. He is now the goaltending coach for the Sharks. It will be nice seeing Schwab back in New Jersey.
