“I think the intensity level was there, the effort was there. We fell behind early, but I thought we were OK. We’ve just got to find a way to win these type of games.”

Pete DeBoer Postgame:
“I thought we got away from our forecheck and we tried to get a little too fancy through the neutral zone. We called a timeout to try to get back at it. We couldn’t get a bounce.”

“It’s kind of nice when Kovy gets in there and scores the first goal. It kind of goes into my hands to make a save and after that it’s a really good chance for us to win. It’s definitely nice to have that luxury of him scoring more often than not.”

Pete DeBoer Postgame:
“It’s a win. We found a way to win a game. I don’t compare this to the Philly game. We created opportunities to score tonight. It just didn’t go in.”

Ilya Kovalchuk Postgame:
“Seventeen shots is never enough. Especially the power play was really bad tonight. We were moving the puck around, but nothing was going on. We’ve got to be a little more simple, especially on that four minute. We tried to be a way too fancy on the blue line and we turned the puck over every time.”

Pete DeBoer Postgame:
“We knew there would be some push back by them tonight after beating them the other night in New Jersey. The bottom line was they got to the areas tonight around the net that we didn’t get to. They got rewarded with a couple of goals and we didn’t get near the net enough.”

“But it was fun. I think we showed a lot of character staying in it. For a while there it felt like we wouldn’t be able to penetrate. Everything we tried was either getting swallowed by him or was blocked by the defensemen in front.”

Pete DeBoer Postgame:
“He gave us a chance. He was our best player tonight. a couple of breakaways and some point blank opportunities. He’s got one of the toughest jobs in hockey coming in cold like he does and following Marty all the time and he continues to get the job done for us. He’s a valuable part of our team.”

“It’s almost as if it was two different teams. Everything we did well in Washington, we didn’t really carry it over to tonight’s game.”

Pete DeBoer Postgame:
“We didn’t do enough to create enough as a group. We didn’t get enough point shots through. Our forwards didn’t get enough zone time. Our goaltender gave us a chance to get points tonight and we didn’t do enough to create offense.”

Team Stats:
Islanders and Devils tied in draws 23-23
Islanders outshot the Devils 25-24
Devils went 0 for 1 on the power play.
Devils outhit the Islanders 23-20

The Devils defensively were not terrible. There were time of pressure by the Islanders but kept them mostly in check. The story of this game was the fact that the Devils offense couldn’t get many shots with the amount of time they spent in the Islanders’ zone. They gave rookie goaltender Anders Nilsson many easy shots to handle. The Islanders defense also blocked a ton of shots. They just wouldn’t give the Devils anything. You have to give the Islanders props after this one. The Devils have to change this if they hope to beat the Rangers and Islanders this week.

Johan Hedberg Postgame:
“Even though I felt calm going into the game, it’s always tough. I hadn’t played for a while. I feel I was playing patiently and I had fun. The team was playing extremely well in front of me, so that certainly helps.”

Pete DeBoer Postgame:
“He (Parise) could have played. If the game had been closer he would have played. It wasn’t necessary. We’ve got busy schedule. We play again in a day and a half here in Long Island. So, we just got some other guys some ice.”

Martin Brodeur Postgame:
“It’s where you’re going to make your brain-dead mistake that’s going to cost you the game. That one turnover, that one bad penalty, you have to be almost perfect to play these type of game. These are what the playoffs are going to be all about. We definitely need to come through in these games. I thought we played a similar game against Vancouver and we came on the wrong side of winning also.

Pete DeBoer Postgame:
“I like how we’re playing. I think the points will take care of themselves. Just like when we were on a winning streak we’ll get out of this as long as we keep playing well and I like our game tonight.”

“Clarkie, that’s his job and he did what he’s supposed to do there. I thought it was interference at the least, but I got an explanation from the ref and that’s all you can ask for. But that’s what teammates do for each other. Clarkie did the right thing there and it was the right message.”

“It’s been going well, there’s no doubt about that. The team is playing really well. We found our game all together and we’ve been rolling. So we just have to keep that going and try to get ourselves into the playoffs.”

Team Stats:
Canadiens outdrew the Devils 26-22
Devils outshot the Canadiens 25-22
Devils went 0 for 0 on the power play.
Canadiens outhit the Devils 25-12

Player Stats:

Another great overall effort for the New Jersey Devils. Martin Brodeur played well but the injured defense stepped up and didn’t have to rely on Brodeur too much. The Devils forecheck also gave help to the defense and Brodeur. The Devils can play like they did today against the Toronto Maple Leafs, they’ll be able to keep rein on the Maple Leafs offense.
